Top Five: Review

Some of the strongest comedians have a hard time translating their comedy to the big screen. Adam Sandler keeps vomiting the first idea that comes to his head and it some how lands on the big screen. Chris Rock's first two films he directed "Head of State" and "I Think I Love My Wife", both weren't strong indicators of his comedic talents, but luckily third time is the charm with Top Five.


Top Five deals with a comedian named Andre Allen (Chris Rock), who is having a mid-life crisis. He is known for making a trio of buddy-cop movies as Hammy the Bear, where his catch phrase is "Its Hammy Time!". He doesn't think he is funny anymore and to combat that he has a film coming out called "Uprize!" which basically is the Haitian version of Django, but with him killing more white people.



With the advent of Uprize! coming out, he is doing press releases, radio shows, and whatever he can to get butts in seats for this movie. He reluctantly decides to am interview for the New York Times, with reporter Chelsea Brown (Rosario Dawson). They have real conversations about his lack of being funny, black culture, and when he hit rock bottom.


Going into this film, it feels like its just going to be another movie where a man having a mid-life crisis tries to find his spot in the world and all becomes well. This doesn't happen in the most wonderful way. This movie is basically a guerrilla style Rom Com. You don't think its going to happen and when it does you feel foolish for not realizing what was going on the whole time. Dawson and Rock have the most wonderful chemistry in this film. A lot of directors do not know what to do with Dawson, other than just make her a pretty ethnic face. Chris Rock has created a multi-faceted female character that feels fresh and is even a force against his comedic prowess.


Go see Top Five. Its a genuinely funny movie with characters that feel and are vulnerable. Its good to see Chris Rock knock one out of the ballpark and I can't wait for his next film. I give Top Five 4 and half hot sauce soaked tampons that are shoved up someone's basement out five.

22 Jump Street REVIEW:

Jonah Hill proves an Oscar nomination (or two) doesn’t make him too cool for comedy as he returns  to Jump Street as “Schmidt” alongside Channing Tatum, aka “Jenko.”

Guess who's back!

The duo was joined by plenty of cameos and familiar faces from the first film. It was meta, self-mocking, and had scenes that were far too obvious in their parodying of buddy-cop films and rom-coms. Unfortunately, like all disappointing comedy sequels, the best scenes were featured in the theatrical trailer.

Nick Offerman, “Deputy Chief Hardy,” reveals one of the film’s plot lines, in its entirety, in the first ten minutes and the drug lord they’re hunting ends up being someone who should have been a suspect from the beginning. Stay for the credits, they were almost better than the actual movie.

3/5 Not as good as the first (surprise!) but still good for a few laughs.

New Dumb and Dumber To Poster

A new poster for Dumb and Dumber To has just come online and the first trailer for the film will debut later today on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The sequel follows Harry, Jeff Daniels, (The Newsroom, Looper) and Lloyd, Jim Carrey (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective) as they head in search for one of their long lost children to hopefully gain a new kidney (Sounds like me in 15 years). The film is due out on November 14th.

A Million Ways To Die In The West REVIEW:

In  A Million Ways to Die in the West. Albert Stark (Seth MacFarlane) is a cowardly sheep farmer who's girlfriend (Amanda Seyfried) leaves him for a more capable and mustached man (Neil Patrick Harris). To help him win her back the new mysterious women in town (Charlize Theron) agrees to help him learn how to shoot. But little does Albert know that her husband, a notorious outlaw played by Liam Neeson, is about to head into town.

First off, this comedy/satire western is definitely geared toward Seth MacFarlane's audience that have enjoyed Family Guy, American Dad, and Ted. So if you are not up for offensive jokes about Indians, or quite a bit of people dying in absurd ways, or someone taking a shit into a hat (Yes, that does happen in the film) , then this is probably not the movie for you. Unfortunately, the film falls short of being any where close as good as his previous work. Though it is crass and funny at times, for every hysterical joke there is, there are quite a few that, much like Albert, really miss the mark. Which is a shame because both Theron and Seyfried turn out great funny performances, but they're just not enough to save the film from mediocre comedy that it unfortunately is.

In short, if you have already seen everything that has come out this summer and need to kill some time at the theater then go ahead and see it, but don't keep your expectations high. Otherwise, just wait it out for a Netflix rental if you're still curious to see it.
