Construction in a suburban neighborhood causes weird sounds and images to pop up on iPhones. Three boys investigate these images and discover that they are looking at a map that leads to the middle of the desert. They follow the map, only to discover Echo, an extraterrestrial robot who needs to phone home go home. This leads the boys on a very predictable adventure.
Earth to Echo was shot with shaky cam from the first person point of view as the boys filmed their adventure. The entire film was one big product placement for Apple Inc. so the boys had to show off their iPhones and Macbooks somehow (I was surprised to see that the control panel on Echo’s spaceship didn’t have an Apple logo on it).
It featured stolen narrative elements from E.T. and Super 8 with sound and visual effects reminiscent of the Transformers movies. If you’ve seen these, you don’t need to see Earth to Echo.
Even the movie posters are similar!

It's called Echo because it's an echo of a 1980s classic. |
The young actors, although talented, lacked the on-screen ensemble chemistry seen in other adventurous flicks such as Goonies or Super 8. The dialogue was weak, the jokes were forced, and a lot of questions were left unanswered.

Major Disappointment |
RATING: 2/5 Not worth a trip to the theatre. If you’ve never seen E.T. or Super 8 and you still really want to see Earth to Echo, wait until Redbox releases it.
